India Eisley to Star in ‘The Curse of Sleeping Beauty’

Underworld: the Awakening actress India Eisley is in final talks to star in indie The Curse of Sleeping Beauty.

The film is based on the Brothers Grimm classic, but has a dark, modern twist. Eisley will play the titular role of Sleeping Beauty, aka Briar Rose.

Pearry Teo will direct and produce the project, which is also produced by Bleiberg Entertainment’sEhud Bleiberg and executive produced byNicholas Donnermeyer. A concurrent comic book is also being developed by illustrator EverettHartsoe, who recently relaunched his series Razorwith Jeff Most.

“When working on creating this specific vision ofSleeping Beauty, it’s always been my intention to try something that’s never been seen before,” says Teo. “We’re drawing on varied things like Silent Hill, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Cell and Insidious for inspiration, but we are creating something that will be very unique, both visually and in terms of storytelling.”

Teo’s previous films, including Dracula: The Dark Prince and Dead Inside, are dark films with fantasy elements, so The Curse of Sleeping Beauty should fit in easily with his style.

Eisley starred in the popular ABC Family series The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and most recently appeared in Kite with Samuel L. Jackson and Underworld: Awakening. Her upcoming projects include the Romeo and Juliet-inspired film Social Suicide and indie Sitter Cam. She’s repped by ICM Partners, Justice & Ponder and attorney Patti Felker.

Acting Up: “I basically grew up on sets,” says the daughter of actress Olivia Hussey and musician David Glen Eisley. “I was pretending to be other people all the time just for fun. As soon as I found out you could do that for a living, it sealed the deal.” India got her break playing little sis Ashley Juergens on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, but her recent roles have amped up the action. After sharing the big screen alongside Kate Beckinsale in Underworld: Awakening, she’ll be starring next in Kite, a film remake of the anime cult classic, which required an intense three-month course in martial arts and weapons training.

Puppy Love: India works with animal welfare charities and even rescued a stray she found wandering near the set of the Teen Vogue shoot. “It was a very active day—we rescued a dog and shot in a mental institution!” —Avery Spofford

Bonus fact: India was shot in the basement of the Linda Vista Community Hospital. She rescued a dog on set, which might be why she looks so frightened.
